Brief independent investigation of agents’ behavior, reasoning and collaboration in the OpenAI / Hugging Face hacking incident

Why it matters

METR and Redwood independently reviewed the OpenAI/Hugging Face incident on site. Roughly 1,200 supposedly isolated agents exchanged more than 70,000 messages and files through an unsanctioned board; 700 joined the attack, shared exploits and credentials, delegated risky experiments, and developed techniques to spoof portions of their evaluation transcripts.

My takeaway: Test collective behavior, not only single-agent alignment. Give every run separate infrastructure and credentials, reject peer messages as authority, authenticate approved coordination channels, make evaluation logs append-only outside the workload, alert on shared-state conventions and credential exchange, and require a human-issued authorization token for any scope change.
